It was a shame to hear yesterday about the death of Ray Manzarek. I always liked the Doors though i was never thier greatest fan but i always remember that it was Ray Manzareks keyboards that attracted me to them in the first place rather than the excesses of jim morrison though i grew to appreciate him also.
I still can hear in my head the intro to riders on the storm.
And probably even better the intro and the whole song with light my fire
He will be missed though i am sure that he had a good life and luckily did not die too young as mr morrison did.
Mind you i think that we all die to young be we nine or ninety there is always so much more out there and we rarely experience a tithe of it- lol- old measure meaning a tenth.
Goodbye to Ray Manzarek May you rest in peace or better still with the intro to Riders Of the Storm echoing in your mind. You will be remembered.
I was reading today about the release of Inferno. Dan Brown’s new book and it seemed as though no one had anything good to say about it. Amongst the other things I read and heard (on the radio) I heard, badly written, contained spelling mistakes, bilge.
Now i have not yet read the book but i shall soon and i find all of those comments very hard to believe (obviously reserving judgement until i have read it myself) . Admit it, Dan Brown writes a damn good thriller. Angels and demons was my favourite and digital fortress the least but even his not so good thrillers are still enjoyable that is why we always buy them. Dan Brown does not pretend to be the new Shakespeare, he is never going to be the writers writer, or the aesthetes writer, he will never be as grandly descriptive as Hermann Hesse for example nor as overwhelming as Nabakov could be but lets be honest here he is not trying to, he is writing a story that keeps you gripped to the very end and i really do not care if there is a spelling mistake or a bit of bad grammar and i am really glad that he does it just the way he does as in the end you get to enjoy a very gripping and enjoyable thriller. That is Dan Browns job and a job that he does very well indeed in my opinion.
I am now old enough to be a grandfather though i thankfully am not. My kids are still to young to my mind to have children of thier own.
But thats the thing really. Dont you all feel sorry for the kids of today as far as music goes. I do. They have the odd wee record that makes it into the charts and apart from that its the stuff we listened to or what happened to be on the x-factor or american idol. I think it is such a shame- we need the music that was of our time, it helps define us in an odd way. My sons favourite band is Radiohead and i introduced him to them when pablo honey came out in the late eighties- i really think that he should have his own stuff. I hate the way the music industry has gone. Now to find something new and cool you have to trawl through youtube, the real music industies voice and find the good ones. But can you be bothered? I cannot.
The SNP had thier short chance to convince us (those that lay just beyond thier line but may have been tipped into voting for independance) that they were right, instead they have just confirmed our many worries and fears. They are not ready for government.
The Moonchild will almost certainly be the next book that I produce and will be a follow up to “A River of Tears” although it will take a completely different style and format to the first volume which essentialy consisted of five (long) short stories and a novella. This time around it will be a novel though it will be made up of six or seven different stories that intertwine and that have a shared beginning and ending. It stays true (I think) to the first volume though is far more complex which I hope does not let it down . I do not think that it will and I think people will be happy with the combining theme. It will still be a work of romance and fantasy coupled with an ecological background peopled by strange and diverse creatures not the least of whom will be we humans.
It is obviously still some time away, “The Secret Inside” is only just out and I am hoping that people will buy it. Of course it is a very different beast of a novel and I would not like to confuse anyone by having two new books out at the same time that could not be more different. Therefore it will be a while until “Moonchild” is out.
Over the years now I have released a few novels and a couple of compendiums of short stories, some better than others but mainly pretty good if I do say so myself with the exception of “Cornelius” which I have always hated. “A River of Tears” has never been a best selling book, in actual fact it has sold very few copies despite the amount that it is talked about.
I have no idea of the reason for the lack of sales other than the obvious fact that a book of short stories will never sell as well as a novel. Yet it has engendered more comment (bad as well as good) Made more headlines, Been quoted by the press and talked about more than anything else that I have produced. Much to both my joy and dismay it is always the book that people want to talk about when someone recognises me or I tell a group of people who I am.
I still get the comment all the time; “You’re the guy that wrote about the forests dying, the faerie people being killed by our factories, you dont believe all that shit do you?
For a book that has sold so little it seems to have affected those that have read it and so I have always thought to do a follow up. I did not wish to just rehash the same old ideas and so I have waited until I could do it justice and now I am ready. The follow up will be a self contained novel as opposed to five short stories and a novella. It will explore the same themes but reach deeper and there will be many new surprises on the way.
I have decided to add “Nut Brown eyes” onto good reads for a free download. I have made my money back for it already over the years. and so decided to put it out there for a free download. I really dont know what you would call it other than a good story that you are getting for free. It is a novella, a short novel or a long short story. No matter what you call it it is available here for free for the first time.
Why would i do such a thing you may ask yourself and that would be a good question to ask. The answer is threefold. The first is that an opportunity presents itself to let more people view my work and hopefully, therefore, more people to like my work. The second is that “Nut Brown Eyes” although a short book, i still think is rather cool and therefore may attract someone to buy one of my other books. And third, i always feel guilty taking money for a short book even though i priced it as such and this has repaid me in full already and much more.
So anyway assuming “goodreads” accepts it and i cannot imagine any reason why they should not then for the very first time “Nut Brown Eyes” will be available for free. I hope eveyone likes it and if you do a big like or a good review would be appreciated.
